For many people, a visit to St. Petersburg begins at Pulkovo Airport: the two terminals, Pulkovo 1 and 2, are the air gateway to St. Petersburg.
Pulkovo 1
Flights within Russia and the CIS, as well as a number of international charter flights, are served by Pulkovo 1, which has a handling capacity of 1200 passengers an hour. The terminal opened in 1973, but during the last three years has undergone a major refurbishment. The first stage was the reconstruction of the ramp, including all the engineering communications. April 2000 saw the official opening of the international sector at Pulkovo 1, enabling the terminal to handle flights from abroad. The new Arrivals and Departure Lounges are equipped with modern computer facilities. A "Green Corridor" has been provided for passengers with nothing to declare. There is duty-free shop run by the "Lenrianta" company and an Irish bar called "One for the Road" in the Departures Lounge.

Pulkovo 2
The majority of long-haul international flights are served by Pulkovo 2, which is now the second largest international airport in Russia, with a handling capacity of 800 passengers an hour. The terminal was built in the early 50s and was last refurbished in the late 80s and early 90s; it was then that the arrivals and departures areas were enlarged and connected by a spacious gallery, with comfortable seats for relaxation, television and a bar, where passengers could while away the time before boarding their flight with a cup of aromatic coffee. Pulkovo 2 is equipped with three telescopic gangways made by the American company JET WAY SYSTEMS, providing the opportunity to pass directly from the comfort of the gallery to the cabin of the aircraft. The use of automatic check-in procedures for passengers and luggage and the SDCS loading system also assist in improving the standard of service.
