State Tretyakov Gallery
The State Tretyakov Gallery is a largest museum in the world. It is the main national collection, representing the development of Russian art from the XI to OO centuries. The foundation of the museum was laid by the merchant P. Tretyakov in 1856, who donated his collection to the city in 1892. The museum houses a collection of more than 130,000 artworks. In the historical home of the Gallery on Lavrushinsky Pereulok one can find unique icons. In the art section of the XVIII to the first half of the XIX centuries, portraits of Russian governors are displayed. Russian painting of the early XIX century is also presented there. The gallery has an extensive collection of realistic painting of the second half of the XIX century. Art nouveau and impressionism collections are on display in the section of the XIX-XX centuries.

State Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val
The development of Russian art of the XX century - from the avant-garde of the 1900's to the creative quest of painters of the 1980's and 1990's - is presented in the new premises of the Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val. The collection boasts the paintings by the world-famous masters of avant-garde - V. Kandinsky, K. Malevich, M. Shagal and the well-known "Amazons" of avant-garde - N. Goncharova, N. Udaltsova and L. Popova. Masters of other styles are also widely presented - from expressionism and traditional realism to socialist realism that became the official style of the totalitarian epoch of the 1930's to 1950's. The nonconformist art of the 1960's -1970's, known as "The Second Wave of Russian Avant-garde" is also presented. Special collections reflecting the newest trends in contemporary art complete the exposition.

Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts
This is one of the most significant art collections in Russia presenting works of world art from ancient times to nowadays. It was founded in 1912 by Ivan Tsvetaev, professor of Moscow University. The museum was created on public donations, the most significant part being made by the Russian patron of art Y. Nechaev-Maltsev. The architect of the building was R. Klein. In 1937 the museum was named after the great Russian poet A. Pushkin. The collection totals more than 500,000 works of painting and plastic art, graphic and applied art, archeological findings and numismatics. Masterpieces by Botticelli, Veronese, Tiepolo, Poussin, Vatto, Bouche, Corot, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Mattise and Picasso are also displayed there.

Museum of Private Collections
The museum was created in 1985 as a branch of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. It collects and exhibits private collections. The gallery was first opened for visitors in 1994. It is located in a mansion of the XVIII-XIX centuries, next to the main building of the Pushkin State Museum. The museum's collections are based on donations from I. Zilbershtein, A. Rodchenko, A. Tyshler, L. Pasternak, D. Sternberg and renowned Russian collectors.

Bakhrushin Theatrical Museum
Rare editions of theatrical plays, sketches, theatrical properties, costumes and personal belongings of Chaliapin, Komissarzhevskaya, Pavlova and other great Russian actors are on display there. The expositions tell about the roots of the Russian theatre, Russian theatrical life in the XVII - XIX centuries, as well as the Russian theatrical avant-garde. Paintings by K. Korovin, V. Serov, A. Golovin and L. Bakst, photographs of F. Chaliapin, L. Sobinov, M. Ksesinskaya and many other interesting exhibits are on display in the museum.

The Russian Academy of Arts
The Russian Academy of Arts is an oldest state cultural institution. Since its foundation in 1757, the Academy has aimed its activities at promoting the national fine arts, organizing educational process and research in the field of history of arts. The Academy has the oldest in Russia research museum and a number of museum-exhibition complexes. Exhibition halls in the building of the Academy's Presidium demonstrate works of artist-members of the Academy.

Zurab Tsereteli Art Gallery, Museum and Exhibition Complex of the Russian Academy of Arts
The gallery is housed in the architectural ensemble "Dolgorukovs' Manor – Alexandro-Mariinsky Institute", renovated and reconstructed in 1998-2000 under the guidance of Zurab Tsereteli, the President of the Russian Academy of Arts. Major national and international exhibition projects, cultural events and presentations regularly take place there. The gallery presents the most complete collection of Zurab Tsereteli's works: paintings, graphics, enamel, sculptured reliefs, monumental statues and monument models.
Exhibition halls of the Gallery are open:

Andrey Rublyov Museum of Early Russian Culture and Art
The museum is located in the ancient Spaso-Andronikov (Our Saviour-St. Andronicus) Monastery where A. Rublyov lived and worked. The Cathedral of Our Saviour of the Monastery (early XV century) is a most ancient temple in Moscow. The museum has a rich collection of icon painting of the XII to XVII centuries, as well as works of plastic art, ancient needlework, hand-written and black-letter books. Amongst the masterpieces of the museum – the icons "Our Saviour the Pantocrator" (XIII century.), "John the Baptist" (early XV century, A. Rublyov's circle), "The Assumption of Our Lady" (early XVI century, Dionisius's workshop) and "Our Lady of Vladimir and Volokolamsk" (late XVI century).

Museum of Oriental Arts
This is the only museum in Russia devoted to Oriental and African arts. Painting, sculpture, works of decorative and applied art from ancient times to the early XX century are displayed there. The museum houses a collection of more than 60 thousand artworks. One of the sections presents works by Nikolai Roerich, a Russian artist, historian and traveller who devoted most of his life to exploring the Orient.

Roerich International Centre And Museum
The museum was founded by Nikolai Roerich's younger son, Sergei Roerich, who donated the heritage of the Roerich family to Russia in 1990. It is located in the former Lopukhins' manor-house – an architectural monument of the XVII -XIX centuries. The exposition features biographical facts of the Roerich family and presents multiple facets of their creative, research and public work. The collection of the museum comprises paintings by Nikolai and Sergei Roerichs, archival materials, personal belongings and rarities, as well as works of decorative-applied and plastic art from the Roerichs' collection. The museum has a lecture hall and an optical theatre. Concerts of classical music and exhibitions of contemporary art are also held there.

Alexander Shilov Gallery
The Moscow State Picture Gallery of the National artist of the USSR A. Shilov was founded in 1997 on the initiative of the State Duma and Moscow Government. The basis of the collection was made up of the artist's paintings and graphic works that he presented to his compatriots.
Nowadays, the museum collections are displayed in luxurious show-rooms located in two buildings united into a single architecture and art complex – a new building designed by M. Posokhin in 2003 and in a mansion of 1829, erected by a project of a renowned Russian architect E. Tyurin.
The portrait gallery, created by A. Shilov, reflects the picture of Russian life from the last third of the 20th to the 21st cc. Portraits of famous men of art and culture, along with common people images and portraits of participants in the Great Patriotic War and clergymen, as well as lyrical landscapes and still-lives – every piece of work is made in the best traditions of classical realistic art. The gallery is constantly replenished with new works of the artist, regularly presented by A. Shilov to Moscow. A harmony of paintings, architecture and classical music that sounds in the halls of the Gallery creates a unique spiritual atmosphere. Music soirees and chamber concerts are held here on Saturdays.

Moscow Kremlin State Historical and Cultural Preserve
This is a unique complex incorporating art and history museums: the architectural ensemble of Sobornaya Square with Uspensky Cathedral (1475 - 1479, architect - A. Fioravanti); Arkhangelsky Cathedral - a magnificent specimen of medieval architecture which served as a burial-place of grand Moscow princes, tsars of the Rurikovich dynasty and the first tsars of the Romanov dynasty; Blagoveshchensky Cathedral - the home temple of the grand Moscow princes and later on, of the Russian tsars. A unique ensemble of monumental painting of the epoch of Ivan the Terrible and icons painted by Feofan Grek and Andrey Rublyov are treasured there. The museum collections of the Moscow Kremlin introduce to visitors various aspects of Russian art and lifestyle. The permanent exhibition of Russian wooden sculpture is presented in the gallery of the Church of the Deposition of the Robe. Rare historical and cultural monuments of the XVII century are on display in the Patriarch's Chambers. Ancient state regalia, tsars' apparels and coronation dress and vestments of hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church are treasured in the Armoury. Outstanding monuments of decorative and applied art from Russia, European and Oriental countries, dating from the IV to the early XX centuries, are also exhibited in the museum. The Moscow Kremlin is on the UNESCO list of the world cultural and natural heritage.

Excursions in Moscow Kremlin State Historical and Cultural Preserve

State Historical Museum
The museum was founded by Alexander II in 1872. It was opened in 1883. More than 4.5 million items and about 15 million sheets of unique documentary archives represent history and culture of the Russian state. Monuments of Russian history, from ancient times up to the beginning of the XX century, are displayed in the halls of the museum, each of them being decorated in the style of a certain historical epoch. In Paradniye Seni (Main Lobby), concerts of classical and church music and choir singing are regularly held.

Museum of the History of Moscow
The museum was established under the initiative of the Municipal Duma on December 14, 1896. On display are archeological artifacts from the occupation layer of the XIII to XIX centuries: crockery, children's toys, tiles, monetary treasures of the XVI to XVII centuries, weapons, domestic and church utensils, various iron and leather articles and many other objects representing life of the medieval Moscow. The museum boasts a collection of A. Vasnetsov's works.

Old English Court Museum
This is a unique specimen of the XV- XVII cent. civil architecture. The brightest pages in the history of the Chambers are connected with the beginning of Russian-English relations in the times of Tsar Ivan IV and Queen Elizabeth I. In 1556 - 1649, the residence of the London trading Muscowy Company shared the building with the English Court, the first official representation of a western country in the Russian capital. On October 18, 1994, after a long period of restoration works, the museum was opened to visitors. Chamber concerts of ancient music and costumed performances are held in the Kazennaya Palata.

Novodevichiy (New Maidens) Convent
The convent was founded in 1524 by Grand Duke Basil III to commemorate the liberation of Smolensk from the Lithuanian domination. The architectural ensemble of the Convent had been completed by the end of the XVII century. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk - the most ancient stone building of the Convent – has preserved unique wall fresco painting of the XVI century and a magnificent carved iconostasis with icons by outstanding masters of that time. The Convent has also been a burial-place of Russian boyars and royal family members, veterans of the War of 1812, writers, historians and statesmen. Exhibitions are held in the Irina Chambers and Sofia Chambers. In 2004 Novodevichiy Convent was entered in the UNESCO List of World Heritage.

St. Basil's Cathedral
The cathedral was erected in 1555 - 1561 by two Russian architects, Barma and Postnik, under the decree of Tsar Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the Kazan Victory. In 1588, the nine-domed Pokrovsky Cathedral was added to by the tenth church - the memorial temple built on the burial-place of Vasily (Basil)the Blessed revered by Muscovites. Gradually the Cathedral became known among people as St. Basil's Cathedral. In the Vestry of the Cathedral regular exhibitions are held.

Museum of Christ the Saviour Cathedral
This is a symbol of military glory, a monument in commemoration of the victory of the Russian Army over the Napoleon's army in the Patriotic War of 1812. The largest orthodox cathedral in Russia was built on public donations in 1839-1883. In 1931 the Cathedral was destroyed by Stalin's order, but by April 19, 1998 it had been restored. There is the only museum in Moscow located within a working cathedral. Amongst the exhibits of the museum are priceless relics from the destroyed cathedral, fragments of memorial tablets with the names of the heroes of the War of 1812 and chronicles of battles, as well as declassified documents testifying the demolition of the Cathedral. From the observation platform one can view a magnificent panorama of Moscow from a 40-meter height.

Borodino Battle Panorama
The museum was founded in 1912 when the artist Franz Roubaud created the panorama "Borodino Battle" on the occasion of the centenary of the Patriotic War of 1812 and displayed it in a wooden pavilion on Chistoprudny Boulevard. Since 1962 the panorama has been on display in a new building on Kutuzovsky Prospect, the former village Fili. It was in Fili that the military council was held in 1812, that made a decision to leave Moscow to the French army. The exposition is dedicated to the Patriotic War of 1812 - from the invasion of the Napoleon's army in June to its defeat in December. Alongside the panorama "Borodino Battle" (of size 115 x 15 m), weapons and regimentals of Russian and French armies, painting, sculpture, graphic art and coins are displayed.

Central Museum of Armed Forces
This is a world centre of military history. It was founded in December 1919. The exposition is spread throughout 24 halls and spans the history of the Russian and Soviet armies and Fleet from the beginning of the XVIII century up to nowadays. The collection comprises more than 800,000 military history relics: items of clothing, medals and weapons that belonged to the royal family, generals, officers and soldiers of the Russian Army; personal belongings, decorations of well-known military officers and statesmen and participants in the Great Patriotic War. The priceless relic - the Banner of the Victory raised above Reichstag in May 1945 - and trophies of the Second World War are also treasured there. Fragments of the American reconnaissance aircraft "Lockheed U-2" are reminders of "The Cold War" time. Exhibits featuring the contemporary Russian Army are also displayed. On the open-air grounds one can find about 200 items of weapons and combat machinery.

Central Museum 0f Great Patriotic War 0f 1941-1945
This is a federal institution of culture, the centre of the Memorial Complex on Poklonnaya Gora, created to commemorate the victory over nazism and immortalize heroic deeds, courage and self-sacrifice of the patriots of the Motherland. It was opened on May 9, 1995 (architects - N. Tomsky and A. Polyansky, main designer - Z. Tsereteli). The memorial comprises the Victory Park, the Main Victory Monument (141.8-m-high), the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 and the open-air exhibition of military vehicles and engineering fortifications. The exhibition has over 110,000 items of authentic weapons, military vehicles, uniforms, medals, photos, documentary films, letters from the battlefield, works of art, pictures, posters and other documents of the war-time.

Museum of Contemporary History of Russia
The city manor that houses the collection of the museum was constructed for the family of General A. Kheraskov, a brother of the Russian poet M. Kheraskov. This is a monument of Russian classicism of the end of the XVIII century. The well-known English Club - the centre where public opinion of old Moscow was shaped, was located there in 1831–1917. In 1924, the first exposition of the USSR Museum of the Revolution was opened in the building. The collection of the museum totals about 2 million exhibits. In the interiors, preserved from the times of the English Club, rare documents and photographs, paintings and works of decorative and applied art, books and banners, weapons and decorations, as well as personal belongings of outstanding state and public figures, military commanders, world-famous Russian writers, poets and musicians and of ordinary people, are displayed.

Archaeological Museum of Moscow
The museum was opened on Manezhnaya Square on September 6, 1997 to mark the 850th anniversary of Moscow. It is located at a depth of seven metres in an area of archeological sites in the historical centre of Moscow. The exposition is based on the remains of the white-stone Voskresensky Bridge (architect - P. Geiden) - a monument of XVII century architecture, as well as archeological finds and monetary and ware treasures.

Lefortovo Museum
The first museum of a city district in Moscow, opened on September 25, 1999. The exposition features the history of Lefortovo from the times of the German Settlement on the Yauza River up to now. Considerable attention is given to contemporary history of the district- one of the industrial areas of Moscow. The exhibits tell about one of the closest friends and associates of Peter the Great F. Leforte, a Swiss of the French origin. Visitors can see how the young Peter arranged battles of his "funny" regiments made of peasants' children from neighbouring villages, thus rehearsing the future victories of the Russian Army. Lefortovo is also connected with the activity of a great scholar and military officer of Peter's epoch, Y. Bruce, descendant of druids, as the legend goes. Later on, Lefortovo housed elite regiments of the Russian Army, a hospital, cadet corps, and a military school.

Pushkin Literary Museum
The museum is located in one of the most beautiful mansions built in the Moscow empire style, the former manor-house of the Khrushchevs-Selesnyovs on Prechistenka. The exposition tells about the life and work of Alexander Pushkin. The atmosphere of Pushkin's times is reconstructed in the halls. The museum presents a vast collection of books, furniture, painting and decorative art of the XIX century.

Maxim Gorky Literary Museum
The museum is located in a building constructed by the architect D. Zhilyardi - one of the best specimens of Russian classicism. The exposition tells about the life and creative quests of the writer. Among the exhibits are unique works of painting and graphic art, sculptures, books, photos with autographs and M. Gorky's personal belongings.

Sergei Esenin Museum
The great Russian poet Sergei Yesenin lived here between 1911 and 1918. The Moscow period of his creative life is featured by an outstanding exposition which traces back the creative quests of the great poet. Guided tours are accompanied by audio- and video-programs displaying rare shots of S. Yesenin's life.

State Literary Museum L.N. Tolstoy
A world oldest literary and memorial museum, a large research center of studying, preserving and proliferating the writer's literary heritage. The Tolstoy Museum in Moscow was initiated by some renowned writers and artists. It was opened on December 28, 1911 (old-style) in the house of the Tolstoy Society at 18, Povarskaya Street.

Marina Tsvetaeva Museum and Cultural Center
The museum is unique due to the history of its foundation, its designation and its structure. It is both a memorial museum of a poet and a research-consulting literary and art centre. It was opened on November 12, 1990 under Dmitry Likhachev's initiative. The museum has permanent and mobile exhibitions. Literary and musical performances and meetings with researchers of M. Tsvetaeva's life and works are held here. The museum has a library of publications on Tsvetaeva's poetry and the archive materials telling about the emigration period in Tsvetaeva's life.

Mayakovsky Museum
In this house the poet - futurist V. Mayakovsky lived between 1919 and 1930. The museum comprises more than 50 thousand exhibits. Personal belongings of the poet, family relics, paintings, works of graphic art, sculptures, posters are on display. The book fund of the museum contains a unique collection of poetry of the beginning of the XXth century, including lifetime publications of V. Mayakovsky's works.

Kuskovo Estate of XVIII Cent. and Museum of Ceramics
The estate of Kuskovo is a monument of art-culture of the XVIII century. The summer residence of Counts Sheremetyevs, arranged with "innumerable comforts and pleasures" was intended for splendid receptions, mass theatrical festivals and merrymaking. Up to now more than 20 unique specimens of architecture are preserved; among them are the Palace, the Grotto, the Big Stone Greenhouse, an ancient church and others. The sightseeing attraction of the Kuskovo estate is the French regular park with marble sculptures, ponds and original pavilions. The collection of ceramics and glassware of different countries from antiquity up to the present day and also the collection of porcelain of Russian and European manufactories of the XVIII– to XIX centuries are displayed in the museum.

Excursions to Kuskovo Estate and Museum

Arkhangelskoye Museum and Estate
This is a palace and park ensemble of the classicism epoch. Until 1809 the estate belonged to the Golitsyns' princes, from 1810 - to prince N. B. Yusupov and his descendants. The construction and decoration of the estate is connected with such renowned names as Gern, Trombar, Pettondi, Gonzag, Bove and Klein. In the collection of paintings there are artworks of the greatest Western-European artists of 17th-19th centuries - A. Van Dyke, D. B. Tiepolo, F. Bushe, G. Rober, etc. The collection of applied art includes bronze artworks, clocks, furniture, porcelain of the Yusupov factory in Arkhangelskoye (1820's - 1830's) and of leading European manufactories of 18th -19th centuries. The Yusupov's collection also boasts sculptures of the 8th century B.C. to the beginning of the 20th century. Kolomenskoye Art Museum and Nature Preserve
Founded by P. Baranovsky in 1923, the preserve covers a territory of 390 hectares in the southern part of Moscow and includes excellent examples of Russian architecture: one of the first stone hip roof temples of Russia - the Church of the Ascension (1532), the Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan (1644-1670), archeological monuments and specimens of wooden architecture transported from different parts of Russia, among which are the Tower of the Bratsky Ostrog (Bratsk Jail) of the middle of the XVII century, the Sacred Gate of the Nikolo-Karelian Monastery of the end of the XVII century, the memorial small house of Peter the Great (1702) and an auxiliary building of the Preobrazhensky Palace of the beginning of the XVIII century. In the park of the preserve there are relic 200-year-old oak- and linden-trees. Regular exhibitions are held in the museum.

Kuzminki Museum of Russian Estate
It is located in a most picturesque Moscow estate of Vlakhernskoye-Kuzminki formerly owned by barons Stroganovs and princes Golitsyns. The history of the estate dates from 1702, when Peter the Great donated these lands to baron Stroganov for special merits before the Motherland. The architectural ensemble was designed by the best Russian architects and sculptors of those times – R. Kazakov, I. Vitali, P. Klodt, D. Zhilyardi, I. Zherebtsov and others. On September 5, 1999 it housed the museum of the Russian estate culture. The exposition will acquaint you with the history of the estate, routine of the Russian nobility, manner of life and the hobbies of the estate owners. The museum may offer unique excursions and programs – Picnic in the Manor, Historical Amusement Park, literary and musical salons etc.

Ostankino Estate
The ensemble of palaces and parks of the XVIIIth century located in the northern part of Moscow had been formed during several centuries. The first mention of Ostankino dates back to the middle of the XVIth century. The oldest preserved monument of the estate is the Church of Life-Giving Trinity of the late XVIIth century housing a unique carved iconostasis. The Ostankino Theater Palace constructed at the end of the XVIII century to the order of Earl N.P. Sheremetev is famous for its theater hall and unique acoustics. The interiors of the gala rooms preserved the original decor, including lighting devices made of crystal, bronze, carved gold-plated wood and the unique artistic parquet.

Tsaritsyno Museum and Nature Preserve
This is an architectural ensemble constructed under the decree of Catherine the Great by the Russian architect V. Bazhenov in the neo-and pseudo-Gothic style. On the high hills there one can see mansions, pavilions, bridges and gates made from brick and decorated with white stone. The well-preserved gorgeous Ornamental Bridge links the effective driveway to the estate and a romantic lay-out of the park. Mobile exhibitions are displayed in the Middle-size and Small Palaces and the 2nd and 3rd Grand Cavalry Stables. Concerts of classical music are held in the Opera House.

Izmailvo Country Estate
This is a country residence of Russian tsars in the XVII - XVIII centuries. In the XIX century, the Nikolaev Military Hospital was located in the estate. The exposition "Izmailovo and the Russian Governors" is displayed in the XVII century monument - the Bridge Tower.

NATURAL SCIENCE MUSEUMS

Polytechnic Museum
The largest science and technology museum in Russia and the world. It was founded under the initiative of Russian scholars and members of the Imperial Society of Natural Sciences, Anthropology and Ethnography. The museum was set up on May 30, 1872 with the opening of a large polytechnic exhibition, devoted to the 200th anniversary of Peter the Great. Richest collections of the museum that acquaint visitors with the history of Russian and world science and technology are used in the exposition. On display are also unique editions, lifetime publications of outstanding scholars, works of academies and research societies. There are over 160,000 exhibits, more than 150 collections, about 500 working mock-ups and dioramas. The scientific library comprises more than 3 million copies of books and printed publications. Poetic and musical performances, meetings and lectures of scientists are held in the Big Hall of the museum.

State Darwin Museum
This is one of the oldest and largest natural-science museums, not only in Russia but also in Europe. It was founded in 1907 by professor A. F. Kots. The exposition tells about various forms of life on the Earth. Apart from traditional exhibits of a natural-science museum, such as stuffed animals and birds, skeletons, shells of molluscs, insects and pictures, there are also moving models of dinosaurs, game machines with sounds of animals, large video screens with educational films and a light-video-musical exposition called "Alive Planet".

Museum of Cosmonautics
In 1964, one of the most magnificent monuments of the XX century - the "Monument to the Conquerors of Space" (by sculptor A. Faidysh-Krandievsky, architects A. Kolchin and M. Barsch) was erected in Moscow. The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics was opened at the pedestal of the Obelisk in 1981. The exposition is devoted to the achievements of Soviet and Russian cosmonautics and to the most significant events in the country's history in the XX century.

V.Vernadsky Geological Museum of Russian Academy of Sciences
The museum was founded in 1755 as a collection of "creations of nature" at the Imperial Moscow University. The historical collection includes donations from the Demidovs' dynasty, princess Ekaterina Dashkova, the Gagarins' princes, collections of the academicians A. Pavlov and M. Pavlov, V. Vernadsky, A. Fersman, etc. The expositions of the museum are: "The World of Minerals", "The Earth and its Biosphere", "Geological Sketch of Moscow's Vicinities", "Historical Collections" and "Geological Kunstkamera".

Museum of chocolate factory "Red October"
The museum of history of confectionery factory "Red October" has been opened on territory of factory on May, 27th, 1994. The area of a museum is 600 sq.m. In 2005 21 650 tourists has visited museum and every year number of them grows. Visitors acquaint with an exposition of museum, and also with industrial and technological processes in chocolate and candy shops of factory. Historical documents, photos, confectionery packing are presented in exposition of museum, labels, advertising, fragments of manufacture of end X I X - beginnings XX ages. Now there are more than 12 000 exhibits from history of the basic stages of becoming and development of the enterprise since 1851 till present time in museum. Funds of museum constantly replenish. Actively electronic archive of a museum is formed and in which has already been put on more than 8000 exhibits.
