Tour: Two Capitals

Kazan

Long since various influences and mysteries of the Western and Eastern civilizations were interlaced in Kazan City. As ancient Rome, staying on seven hills, Kazan used to be a capital of ancient nation and ancient country. Located by fortune in the real heart of Russia, only 800 km to the southeast from Moscow, Kazan is a capital of original people and multinational republic, which still exists between Volga and the Ural Mountains. This people possess its own language, culture, its own century-old traditions and festivals, its own faith, although the past and the present is tightly bound sometimes dramatically and in a fatal way with the history and future of Russia. The people mentioned are Kazan Tatars, the country mentioned is Tatarstan. The first state in this region was Volga-Kama Bolgaria, appeared at the end of the 9th century. One century later Islam was established as a state religion. After Mongolian invasion Bolgaria became a part of powerful Golden Horde State and was formed by the end of 14th century in Kazan Khanate. In October 1552 Ivan IV (the Terrible) conquered Kazan and Kazan became one of the important industrial and cultural centers of Russia. A path-breaking step on the way to restoration of statehood of the Tatar people was the declaration of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1920. After the ruin of the Soviet Union the new Constitution of the Republic of Tatarstan established a new state status of the Republic.
